        Legislative Updates

The California legislature is on summer recess until August 18. Upon return they have until September 12 to pass bills before their interim recess. The CA Arts Advocates team will continue to closely monitor the bills we have been tracking and keep you informed to which make it to the Governors desk for his signature or veto. We are cosponsors of SB 456 (Ashby) that would eliminate the requirement for muralists with projects over $1000 to be licensed painting contractors. We are optimistic that this bill will successfully navigate the legislative process and become law by January 1, 2026.

Due to federal funding cuts and ongoing uncertainties, the Legislature might be called into special sessions before its scheduled reconvening on January 6, 2026. As always, you can be up to date on all things related to what is happening in Sacramento by subscribing to our action alerts.

Fall is an ideal time to schedule meetings with your district legislator to discuss policy proposals or funding needs that would benefit local arts and culture. Feel free to share your ideas with us; we can help you refine them or explore how we can collaborate to advance them.

We are preparing for a significant California election in 2026, which will determine the next Governor of the world's fourth-largest economy. CAA is pleased to announce plans to launch a candidate survey for the gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial races, as well as organize a campaign forum. If you are interested to partner with CAA to ensure the next administration comes with an arts, culture and creative economy policy platform and recognizes the sector is mobilized and organized and will hold them accountable to it, please contact julie@caartsadvocates.org.
